The Cornwall Group has been nominated as a finalist in two categories at this year’s G21 Awards, for Best Glass Company and Best Training & Development Initiative of the Year.

Operating across three divisions, Cornwall Glass Manufacturing, Cornwall Glass and Glazing and its merchanting business, Mackenzie Glass, we have continued to invest heavily throughout the pandemic, including a £6m spend to expand capacity at our Highbridge facility near Weston-super-Mare.

We have also created opportunities for 10 new apprenticeships in January this year as part of our continuing commitment to training and development.

Mark Mitchell, Chairman, Cornwall Group, said: “We have worked very hard over the last 18 months to manage our supply chains, and to minimise disruption for our customers, despite one of the most challenging periods the industry has ever experienced.

“We completed a six-figure investment in our processing operation in June, increasing our capacity, and we have introduced new supply partnerships from around the globe in order to meet growing demand in the UK, resulting in record levels of stock throughout lockdown,” he continued. “This included more than 80,000m2 of product and 200 plus glass types at our 37,000ft2 purpose-built Bristol site.

“Our significant investment in Highbridge will give us the capability to increase manufacture of specialist glass and create up to 30 new jobs, and we have also expanded our successful apprenticeship scheme, a key element of our strategy for growth post-Covid.”

The Cornwall Group Apprenticeship Journey is an occupational competency training and assessment programme designed to highlight and promote a career in the glass industry. The 10 new apprenticeships created at the start of 2021, means that Cornwall Group have 20 individuals enrolled in the programme.

The majority of these are undertaking either Level 2 of Level 3 qualifications in glass processing, business administration, glazing, installation, finance and engineering.

“Congratulations to all the finalist at the G21 Awards,” concluded Mark. “The conditions brought about by Covid, which have combined with exceptionally high levels of demand have put a huge amount of pressure on the entire industry – to be recognised for our hard work is a fantastic achievement and a testament to the outstanding team we have at Cornwall Group.”
