Cornwall Group has been shortlisted eight times at the 2024 Cornwall Apprenticeship Awards, reflecting the value our company sees in investing in young talent across the southwest of the UK.
The finalists include Maisie Simpson who joined Cornwall Group in July 2022 as an apprentice in our marketing department. Maisie is in the running for 2024 Achiever of the Year, which recognises a personal challenge or adversity that an apprentice has overcome to complete their apprenticeship.
Maisie is largely responsible for Cornwall Group and our associated companies’ social media pages. This includes five LinkedIn Profiles, four Facebook pages, two Instagram pages, and a Twitter account. After proving her capabilities with social media very quickly, Maisie developed our TikTok presence in February 2023, and successfully filmed and edited several videos based on our Cornwall Group Apprentice Journey.
It hasn’t been an easy year for Maisie, as she had to find her own place to live in October 2022, at the age of 17, but rather than give up on her apprenticeship for full-time work, she was determined to complete her apprenticeship and develop her career within the work-family she found at Cornwall Group.
“Maisie has taken on her extremely unique role with great passion and dedication from the moment she walked into the office on her first day,” Tom Julian, Managing Director of Cornwall Group, said.
“We are so proud of the progress she has made within the last 15 months, and can’t wait to watch as her career develops further at Cornwall Group.”
Demonstrating the importance Cornwall Group places on the role apprentices have in the company, HR and Marketing Manager Emma Harris was shortlisted for the Mentor of the Year. She is a finalist because she has developed an environment of trust, respect, and open communication.
“Emma understands and promotes the family culture that we work hard to maintain and enhance within our Group, our colleagues, and our ambassadors day in and day out,” Chairman Mark Mitchell said. “Emma is a shining example of what makes our business so strong and vibrant, a dedicated and ambitious individual who truly enriches our business.”
The other finalists are: Ned Seaborne (Accountancy); Ashley Triggs (Construction and Trade Occupations); Josh Coopey and Brunel Bickerdike (Digital and IT); Ruby Salmon (Engineering and Manufacturing); and Cornwall Group (Large Employee of the Year).
About 20% of all Cornwall Group employees – Cornwall Glass Manufacturing, Mackenzie Glass and Cornwall Glass & Glazing – joined via our apprenticeship programme, 95% of which have been with the group for 5+ years.
Apprentices have gone on to become Supervisors, Technical Representative, Senior IT Technicians, Project Leaders, Assistant Managers, and even a Managing Director.
